Man Charged With Killing Wife Following Hours-Long Riverhead Standoff

A man was charged with fatally shooting his wife in their Long Island home after an hours-long standoff.

Riverhead Town Police responded to 20 Doris Ave. at approximately 9:20 a.m. Tuesday,  Aug. 27, after receiving reports of a man carrying a handgun. 

Suffolk County Police Hostage Negotiation Team and Emergency Service Section officers responded to the house where Robert Brown had barricaded himself, police said.

After a nearly four-hour standoff, officers knocked down the front door of the house and Brown was taken into custody at approximately 2 p.m.

Inside the house, officers found Brown’s wife, Sarah Brown, 71, dead from a gunshot wound.

Brown, 65, of Riverhead was taken to Suffolk County Police Headquarters in Yaphank where he was charged with second-degree murder. 

He will be held overnight at Riverhead Town Police Headquarters and will be arraigned Wednesday, Aug. 28 at the Town of Riverhead Justice Court.
